Using a Library Computer

The following programs are available on Library computers:

Microsoft Word 2000
Microsoft Excel 2000
Microsoft Powerpoint 2000
Microsoft Access 2000
Microsoft Publisher 2000
Wordpad
MS Paint

Internet Explorer
Netscape

Adobe Acrobat Reader
Win Zip
Computer Games

Monroe cardholders may log on to Library computers using their 14-digit Library barcode as their password. Computer use is limited to two hours per day and Library computers automatically shut down one-half-hour before the Library closes.

Visitors with an identification card such as a driver's license are permitted to use Monroe Library computers for two hours per day. Visitors may sign-up for a guest computer pass at the Reference Desk.

Printing from a Library Computer

Monroe Cardholders may print for a fee of 10 cents for black and white printouts and 50 cents for color printouts. Users may go to the Reference Desk to add money to their printing accounts in increments of $1. Printing costs will be deducted from this amount and leftover money will stay on the account for future use.

Visitors may print for a fee of 10 cents for black and white printouts and 50 cents for color printouts. Printing fees can be paid at the Reference Desk.

Wireless Access

Users with wireless-enabled laptops or PDAs may access the Internet from any location
inside of the Library through our wireless network.

Class Descriptions

Start-Up with the Internet
These classes will help the novice computer user become comfortable with some basic computer terminology, and use of the mouse. Students will learn the fundamentals of navigating the Internet to find information. Participants will explore Web sites with known addresses and learn how to use search engines and directories through practice searches.

  • This is the most basic computer class that we offer. We recommend that you take this class before attempting any other classes if you are not comfortable with using the Internet, the keyboard or the mouse.

This class will provide instruction on composing and formatting a basic business letter using Microsoft Word. We will cover the use of commands including indenting, creating a bulleted list, text formatting and spell checking. You will need to know how to use a mouse and have some beginning typing skills.

Learn how to locate information on health issues and medications using links from our Web site and other valuable Internet Web sites. You must be competent with both the keyboard and mouse to take this new class. No exceptions!

  • You will need to bring your library card to every class that you attend in order to sign-on to a computer.
  • Computer class sign-ups start at 10:00 AM at the Reference Desk. Doors to the lobby open at 9 AM.
